Day 6

If we were home, we’d be sleeping in on Sunday morning, but not so here. Up at 5:00 am to get ready for our 7:00 am pick up and hour-long drive to the baby house. It was a beautiful morning, sunny and the warmest day so far. Even though the baby house is at the foothills of the mountains, it seems so much warmer in Ecik than it does back in Almaty.

Justin came in and had a brightness in his eyes…he doesn’t want to let on, but we can tell he’s glad were there. We spent the morning in the usual way, playing with toys, walking back and forth, and giving him some apple juice. He’s finally mastered the sippy cup, and it’s a good incentive to walk across the room to get it from one of us.

At 10:00 am, Paige came in and we set up to make a mess with the kasha again! They didn’t take Justin right away, so he sat on the floor and watched his mother get kasha all over his sister’s chest. We spent the next hour with Paige until she fell asleep.

Before we gave Justin his lunch, we dressed him up in the snowsuit we brought, but it was also much too big! But with the little work boots he got from his cousin Kevin, he was able to walk around outside for a little bit before we came in to eat. He ate all his lunch, and even saved room for some peach yogurt!

From there Emil took us into the town of Ecik where we bought some delicious local sweet rolls at a little shop, and a big round loaf of amazing bread at the bazaar. We will definitely get more of that before our time in Ecik is over! We then stopped in at a local Russian Orthodox Church before we headed back to the city. Back in Almaty we visited the Green Market, which is the equivalent of a large flea market with vendors selling everything from clothes, to fresh fruits and vegetables. We would have loved to take a picture, but Emil advised against it. Rob picked up a Soviet Union tee shirt, and we got some potatoes, mushrooms and tomatoes to bring back to the apartment. Emil is always eager to turn American's on to the local horse meat, so today he gave Rob five horse meat sausages that his mother gave to him. They're really just horse meat hot dogs. Rob tried one, and with mustard and 'kraut it wouldn't be too bad, but on it's own it just tasted like a cheap, Oscar Myer wiener. One down, four to go!

We were “home” by 3:00 pm, and as usual, we both fell asleep at 5:00 pm! It's starting to feel like "Groundhog's Day."
