Day 11

Today couldn’t have been more the opposite of yesterday. The sun was back and Justin was a happy camper. Today we decided to keep most of the toys in the bag and just pass a ball back and forth and see if Justin would interact with us instead of us simply entertaining him or watching him play with his stacking cups. First things first, though…had to get that sippy cup of apple juice going. He drinks it up like there’s no tomorrow. Unfortunately, the kids don’t get a whole lot of liquids in a day in order to keep the laundry from piling up, so it’s important to give him as many fluids as we can while we’re there. When the juice is gone, we fill the cup with water, which he’s not as fond of, but getting used to. After the ball we took out his favorite toy, his new hairbrush. He brushed daddy’s hair, then we showed him how to brush his hair, then he turned right to mom to brush her hair! Whatever we engaged him in he would make sure to include us too, while making a little sound, like “huh?” He was much more mobile today, and he got a kick out of his mother crawling across the floor to try to catch him!! It was a great visit and then Miss Paige came in.

Dad got her to belly laugh quite few times before we settled in for her bottle of kasha, which she drank down in about 3 minutes! After a few hearty burps we settled down to “goo goo ga ga” with her to keep her awake. She is extremely alert and aware of everything around her, and she’s almost ready to crawl. We put a toy out of her reach and she shuffled herself right over to get it! She’s a strong little one and we feel she’s going to grow in leaps and bounds once we’re home.

Before lunch we bundled Justin up in his snowsuit to get some fresh air. Again, within 5 minutes, he fell asleep! He was a good eater today. At one point he made that little frog sound with his throat. We said something like “What was that? (really, all we said was “What the?”) and he did it again with a little grin on his face. It cracked us up, much to his delight! After lunch he had his yogurt, and all the while he was reaching out to us and feeling very mellow and content. When Gulnara returned him to his group, she came back and said his caretakers are all thrilled with his progress. He would usually just settle in to his walker to get around, but now he’s got more self confidence and is picking himself up and standing and walking with the help of the furniture in the room!

On the drive home Gulnara explained what we need to say when we appear before the judge next Friday. She also came up to our apartment to review our gifts and figure out who gets what. On a different note, this morning our shower head blew off in the middle of our showers, spraying water into the light fixtures, blowing out the light bulbs! The shower head broke once before and this one is our replacement. It must have cost all of $1.00 and is virtually useless. We are now unable to shower and hope it gets fixed tomorrow.

Other than that, it’s just tough to stay awake since the heat is so high, so we’ll be heading to bed early, again. Big Friday night in Kazakhstan!!
